Lacrosse player, rower are praised as week’s top athletes

Student-athletes from the Niagara region are Brock University’s top athletes for the week ending Sunday.

Aidan Buis, a fourth-year oenology and viticulture major from Niagara-on-the-lake, earned men’s athlete of the week honours after the Badgers went 2-0 on the weekend. He netted a goal Friday night in a 7-4 road victory over Mcmaster and scored the game-winner and added an assist the following afternoon in a 6-5 defeat of visiting Toronto.

Before Saturday’s homecoming game, Buis received the Paul Miller Lacrosse Award, an award bestowed annually that recognizes dedication and perseverance to the team.

Defending national champion Brock (3-1) completes a home-andhome versus the Varsity Blues (2-2) in men’s lacrosse Saturday night in Toronto.

Brock’s top female athlete, rower Rowan O’neill, raced to gold medals in the women’s lightweight single and women’s lightweight four at the Western Invitational in London, Ont.

The third-year sport management major from Welland was part of a team that rowed to nine firstplace finishes at the season-opening event.

Head coach Peter Somerwil said while the Badgers achieved “excellent results” at the Western Invitational, it is still early in the season.

“A lot can change over the next five weeks leading to the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) championships, so the team will have to keep working hard.”

Brock is back on the water Saturday at the Head of the Trent in Peterborough.

While the site for the OUA championships taking place Oct. 28-29 has yet to be determined, the Canadian championships will be held Nov. 5-6 at the Royal Canadian Henley course in St. Catharines.
