Senate needs to come through on emissions legislation
Re: Emissions, conversion therapy and budget implementation, June 12
Canadians are worried about climate change, and they should be.
What many may not realize is how badly Canada is failing on the climate action front. These failures are largely due to lack of legislation that ensures governments are accountable for meeting emissions targets.
I’ve been following Bill C-12, the Liberals’ proposed net-zero emissions accountability act, as it has progressed through Parliament since November. If it passes, the government will need to make a plan to meet Canada’s 2030 targets. We need this to happen.
If the House of Commons passes Bill C-12 as expected, then the Senate will need to pass it next week before both houses leave for the summer. Fortunately, the Senate Environment Committee has already held six “pre-hearing” meetings. We need our senators to come through for us by June 25.
This crucial legislation is a keystone to the real climate action that so many Canadians are hoping for.
